acetic is a common misspelling of ascetic although it is a word in its own right. Acetic refers to the acid used in vinegar and is used to mean sour. Ascetic means "self-denying" or "self-disciplined" and is used to refer to a person (or to his/her lifestyle) who abstains from many of life's pleasures and who is often a recluse. A person who has such a lifestyle is known as an ascetic.
