adult may be pronounced with the emphasis on either of the two syllables. Thus a-dult and a-dult are both acceptable although the pronunciation with the emphasis on the first syllable (a-dult) is the more common. The adjective adult means "mature", as in "a very adult young man" and "for adults" as in "courses in adult education". However it can also mean "pornographic", as in "adult movies".
