allude should be used only in the meaning of "to refer indirectly to", as in "When he spoke of people who had suffered from mental illness he was alluding to himself". It should not be used simply to mean "to refer to", as in "In his speech he alluded frequently to the fact that he was retiring", although this is commonly found nowadays in informal contexts.
