conjunction

> conjunction
A word that connects words, clauses or sentences. Conjunctions are of two types. A coordinating conjunction joins units of equal status, as in "bread and butter", "We asked for some food and we got it". A subordinating conjunction joins a dependent or subordinating clause to main verbs: in "We asked him why he was there", "why he was there" is a subordinate clause and thus "why" is a subordinating conjunction.
