continual and continuous are not interchangeable. Continual means "frequently repeated", as in "Tired of the continual interruptions he took the telephone off the hook" and "There were continual complaints from the school about the truancy of their children". Continuous means "without a break or interruption", as in "a continuous period of ill health", "machines giving off a continuous high-pitched whine" and "a continuous roll of paper".
