lieutenant is often misspelt. Note the ieu combination. In British English the word is pronounced lef-ten-ant. The word originally referred to an army or naval rank but is also used to mean "a deputy, a chief assistant", as in "The owner of the factory was unavailable but we talked to some of his lieutenants".
