official

> officious and official
officious and official are liable to be confused. They sound and look rather alike but they have different meanings. Official means "authorized", as in "receive an official pass to the conference" and "The police have released an official statement", and "formal", as in "an official reception for the visiting diplomat". Officious means "too ready to give orders, offer advice, bossy, interfering, self-important", as in "told by the officious woman behind the desk that I would have to provide other documentation" and "The child who had lost the money for her fare was put off the bus by an officious inspector".
