precede

> precede and proceed
precede and proceed are liable to be confused because they sound alike but they mean different things. Precede means "to go in front of", as in "The guide preceded us into the room", "to come in front of", as in "The text is preceded by a long introduction" and "He preceded her as chairman". Proceed means "to go on, to continue", as in "Work is proceeding at an even pace" and "We were told to proceed with our work", or "to make one's way, to go", as in "They were proceeding up the street in a drunken manner".
