they, used in conjunction with "anyone", everyone", "no one" and "someone", is increasingly replacing "he" or "she", although to do so is ungrammatical. The reason for this is to avoid the sexism of using "he" when the sex of the person being referred to is either unknown or unspecified, and to avoid the clumsiness of "he/she" or "he or she". Examples of they being so used include "Everyone must do their best" and "No one is to take their work home".
